This is a developmental trading role, with increasing responsibility over time as capability is demonstrated. It requires strong commercial judgment, analytical rigor, and curiosity about evolving biofuel markets, regulatory frameworks, and logistics-driven constraints. This role will develop a deep understanding of how bp manages risk, captures optionality, and converts market insight into trading performance—building a strong foundation for progression into a long-term career trading at bp.
This role will help manage the planned growth in various interface trading books within bio-distillates, including Product Supply Americas, Travel Centers of America (TA) and Cherry Point co-processing.
The Junior Bio-distillates Trader will initiate and execute trading strategies based on current market conditions to deliver the financial plan of the book. Traders are responsible for representing bp in the external commodity markets. The goal of GDIST and our wider ST&S business is to be the most respected energy trader.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, develop, and implement an entrepreneurial trade strategy, using relevant physical and financial instruments in close communication the GDIST team.
- Support senior bio traders in the execution and optimization of physical bio/distillate positions, including bio-feedstocks, biodiesel, renewable diesel, and related commodities
- Assist with daily position management, exposure tracking, and P&L attribution in line with bp standards
- Ensure accurate and timely deal capture and documentation in alignment with bp Policy
- Monitor market fundamentals including supply/demand balances, regulatory impacts (RFS/LCFS, etc.), logistics constraints, and pricing structures
- Maintain forward curves, balances, and internal market views
- Engage with internal partners across supply, logistics, operations, compliance, and risk to support end-to-end trade execution
- Build strong working relationships with external counterparties
- Support development of new commercial opportunities as bio markets evolve, including new products, pathways, and regional flows
Essential Education, Experience and Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- Successful completion of the ST&S assessed traders course (ATC) and/or previous relevant physical commodity trading / biofuels supply experience
- Understanding of key trading principles and fundamentals of the oil & gas industry, including the ability to interpret market data and commercial signals
- Strong commercial and analytical mindset with quantitative problem-solving skills and logical decision-making abilities
- Demonstrated commercial curiosity and interest in biofuels markets
- High attention to detail and disciplined approach to exposure and risk management
- Ability to adapt and operate effectively in a fast-paced trading environment
- Strong communication skills, ability to build external relationships and capability to work collaboratively across internal functions
How much do we pay (Base)? $ 95,000.00 - 176,000.00 USD Annually
- Note that the pay listed for this position is genuinely expected and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.
This position is eligible for US Benefits – Core. This position offers paid vacation depending on your years of relevant industry experience and will range from 120 – 240 hours of vacation per year for full time employees. You will also be eligible for 9 paid holidays per year and 2 personal choice holidays.
