JOB DESCRIPTION
Journeyman Auto Mechanic
Union: U32: $54.09 Per Hour
DEPARTMENT: TRANSPORTATION
DUTIES: Under general directive supervision of chief mechanic.
Performs a variety of duties in the complete maintenance, overhaul, and repair of vehicles such as cars, trucks, tractors, hydraulic units, compressor and portable generator motor units; maintains shop facilities and is generally responsible for all work in progress, scheduling on different repair jobs, and property. Uses and maintains all types of welders, power tools, diagnostic instruments, and testing equipment.
Receives various job work orders and establishes priority and scheduling to expedite equipment repair. Makes working diagnosis of mechanical failures and determines repair or replacement. Performs or may assign the dismantling, overhauling, and assembling of engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, etc.
Overhauls or repairs all electric parts, carburetion, ignition, and instruments including electrical generators and starting motors, voltage regulators, electrical indicators, vacuum systems, electric and mechanical fuel pumps, electric or mechanical brakes, etc.
Initiates requisitions for internal purchasing or may order parts from local service establishments to maintain an adequate supply of parts on hand. Maintains records of material and parts used, jobs completed, and schedule of vehicle preventative maintenance.
Performs body repair work including removing and repairing dents and creases in bodies and fenders, removes and installs fenders; installs glass in doors, windows, and windshields of bodies; does simple carpentry work in the repair of wooden truck bodies. Mixes, blends, and uses a spray gun in touching up repaired portion of vehicle or completed paint jobs as necessary.
Performs all duties in a safe manner complying with all safety and operational procedures; must be proficient in the application of first aid to injured persons; assists in providing instruction and training to shop personnel.
Performs other related and assigned duties.
