Department Overview The Division of Informatics, Clinical Epidemiology and Translational Data Science is an academic unit within OHSU's Department of Medicine. DICE engages in research related to the development, dissemination, and evaluation of information technology and outcomes research in the health care field. DICE research is focused on improving health care practice and outcomes through use of informatics tools and data analytics.
This is a full stack role, managing applications and analytics systems that meet the needs of clinical and basic science researchers at OHSU. This involves working with researchers, implementing analytics platforms and algorithms, creating and administering informatics research databases, developing web-based applications used for research, designing and improving existing Health Information Technology and data interoperability tools and supporting existing applications. This position develops, deploys, supports, and integrates resources and services to aid research.
The Research Engineer 2 position will support two deliverable-based projects in DICE, one under the direction of the Care Management Plus (CMP) team and one under the direction of Dr. Steven Bedrick. The first project is focused on implementing the exchange, analysis and assessment of the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI) + Behavioral Health (BH) elements. The second project is focused on implementing artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) approaches to support evaluation of research trial reporting through a government website. This position is hired as a short-term, 9-month position, with an option to renew depending on performance and funding. The Research Engineer 2 works in collaboration with senior DICE research engineers who provide direction and support for the work.
Function/Duties of Position - Develop and implement software applications using a variety of languages, frameworks, and methodologies (e.g. C#, Java, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML, CSS, Spring Framework, Caffeine, Quartz, FHIR, SQL), that interface with a variety of standard and proprietary data sources and formats (e.g. SQL relational databases, Web Service APIs, JSON, XML, CSV) to gather, filter, transform, aggregate, and display proprietary, clinical, and / or research data.
- USCDI+BH project: Establish host environments for software applications with community-based health care settings. Deploy said software applications to them, establish API connections, and perform all necessary application configuration. Assist clients during user acceptance testing and provide ongoing technical support. Support data security review procedures; identify and address concerns for compliance with privacy and security policies when developing and supporting software systems. Contribute to data mapping, analysis, and planning for dissemination
- Government site project:
- Perform data extracts against databases and other data sources, to analyze extracted data and to summarize results.
- Other tasks as assigned, including but not limited to crafting academic publications, and other software development and systems integration projects. This may include change in projects, technologies, and collaboration with technical peers working within or outside of DICE, or assignment to other programs within DICE.
Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or in a scientific field with Computer Science experience
- At least 3 years experience developing data-driven web-based applications with C# or a similar object oriented language.
- Experience with a variety of object-oriented programming languages and development frameworks, and experience in developing systems that interface with a variety of standard and proprietary data sources (e.g. SQL relational databases, Web Service APIs, XML). Requires knowledge of technological security best practices to mitigate risks.
- Relational databases, extensive SQL expertise; Client-side technologies especially JavaScript/jQuery; Microsoft .NET development, including C# and ASPX; Server administration
Preferred Qualifications - Advanced degree in Computer Science or Informatics
- 1-3 years research or industry experience
- C#, Java, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, HTML, CSS, SQL;
- MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL;
- FHIR; Spring Framework, Caffeine, Quartz; Epic and/or other electronic health record systems; Agile development methodologies
- Excellent communication skills. Communication with health care settings.
- FHIR Proficiency certification
