The Department of Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh invite applications for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to work on projects.
DescriptionofResponsibilities:The successful candidate is expected to• Independently work in a laboratory research setting related to vascular dementia and brain injury research, design and perform experiments.
• Perform various tasks related to several research projects, including development and implementation of detailed neurobehavioral testing, immunohistochemistry, and histology, maintain the breeding and care of several genetically modified and aged rodent colonies, and primary cell cultures.
• Maintenance of experimental record, data analysis and presentation, manuscript, and grant preparation.
• Publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. As part of the postdoctoral experience, applicants will receive mentoring for developing research proposals. Participation in career development activities will be strongly encouraged.
Qualifications:The candidate should demonstrate an academic record of excellence, independent research, and a strong interest in neurobiology research. Applicants with PH.D or equivalent doctorate (M.D.), preferably in molecular biology, biochemistry, and pharmacology, are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates are expected to have:
• A demonstrated commitment to excellent research. The incumbent will be expected to perform complex experimental studies and analyze data independently. He/she will be supervised by the
Principal Investigator and junior faculty members, with work and progress reviewed periodically in individual and group meetings.
• Previous experience and knowledge of experimental research methods. Experience concerning neurofunctional assays, confocal imaging, electrophysiology, primary cell culture, or small animal surgery is a plus.
• The incumbent is expected to maintain accurate documentation of all work performed per University guidelines.
• Good communication skills (oral, written, presentations, etc.). The incumbent will be expected to interact with members of the research community outside of the immediate work area. The purpose of these contacts will include, but not be limited to, the acquisition of techniques and procedures new to the laboratory, the dissemination of expertise on protocols currently used in the laboratory, and presentation of project results at conferences or meetings.
