RWJ University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, New Jersey, is seeking an experienced physician to provide crucial ongoing coverage following the departure of a full-time staff member. The Opportunity Join an established laboratory team within a Level 2 Trauma center, taking over a diverse surgical and cytopathology caseload.
Clinical Scope: Manage general anatomic and clinical pathology services. Key daily responsibilities include:
Surgical pathology sign-out and rush specimen reviews.
Time-sensitive frozen section analysis and intraoperative consultations.
Cytopathology sign-out and performing rapid on-site evaluations (ROSE) for fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology specimens.
Predictable Case Volume: Maintain a highly productive clinical pace within an active laboratory ecosystem. Expected daily volumes include:
Surgical Pathology: 25 to 40 cases per day (9,000 cases annually).
Cytopathology: 3 to 5 cases per day (1,000 cases annually).
Fine-Needle Aspirations (FNA): 2 to 3 cases per day (400 cases annually).
Team & Support Structure: Work alongside three established, full-time pathology MDs and a comprehensive laboratory technical and clerical support staff. The locum physician has no supervisory or administrative oversight responsibilities for Advanced Practice Providers.
The Schedule: Full-time, on-site weekday coverage, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM 5:00 PM. This position requires participation in a rotational night and weekend call schedule.
Integrated Technology: Smooth, fully centralized workflow utilizing a single Epic EMR system implemented uniformly across all laboratory and hospital departments.

Compensation & Shift Logistics Contract Structure: Fixed hourly and call-coverage compensation with robust built-in daily and weekly overtime protections (overtime rates apply after 12 consecutive hours worked in a single day).
Assignment Timeline: Urgent, ASAP start following the completion of emergency privileging. Coverage is ongoing until a permanent replacement is successfully onboarded.

Degree: MD or DO from an accredited medical program.
Board Status: Strict Board Certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) is required.
