About the Team
The Metro team builds systems that shape how customers connect with real estate agents on Zillow. We develop tools for real estate professionals and internal product teams to manage experiences, test ideas, and support customers throughout the home buying and selling journey.
About the Role
This is not a standard Senior Software Development Engineer role. You will build the systems behind how Zillow customers find help, schedule tours, and connect with agents. We seek engineers who turn ambiguous problems into shipped, measurable, reliable products.
Responsibilities
You will take loosely defined ideas and turn them into clear plans with tradeoffs, edge cases, success metrics, and a path to production.
Work closely with product managers, designers, data partners, and other engineers to shape solutions, challenge assumptions, and improve the customer experience.
Build systems that real estate professionals and internal product teams rely on to manage experiences, test ideas, and support customers throughout their journey.
Go where the problem lives: user experience, services, APIs, data models, instrumentation, and operational workflows.
Ship with a solid testing strategy, rollout plan, monitoring, and safeguards for risk.
Follow your work into production, learn from customer behavior and metrics, and continue improving over time.
Raise the bar through code reviews, technical discussions, mentoring, and setting standards in day‑to‑day work.
Qualifications
Significant experience building and shipping software in product environments where engineers own work beyond implementation.
Track record of owning features or product areas from concept through launch and post‑launch iteration.
Strong engineering fundamentals: system design, testing strategy, debugging, maintainability, operational readiness.
Strong product and business judgment, connecting technical decisions to customer impact and company goals.
Full‑stack range to move across user experience, services, APIs, and data concerns when required.
Experience collaborating closely with product managers, designers, and data partners on customer‑facing or workflow‑heavy products.
Practical experience using AI‑assisted development tools or automation as part of day‑to‑day engineering work.
Clear written and verbal communication in English, including writing specs, explaining tradeoffs, and driving decisions asynchronously.
Leadership evidence through ownership, influence, and decision‑making, not only through formal title.
