Assistant or Associate Planner
Good City Company is a California-based planning and consulting firm serving 25+ public agency clients across planning, housing, economic development, and city management. We are seeking an Assistant or Associate Planner to join our team.
The position will focus on current planning and development review. The position will also assist our Advance Planning Manager with policy planning documents and may assist our Economic Development Lead with economic development strategy plans. Depending on applications received, Good City may opt to hire two planners. The positions will be an integral part of the larger Good City Company team and will involve the assignment of projects from several of our public sector clients.
Responsibilities:
- Manage small to mid-size development applications, including commercial, office, and small to mid-size residential projects
- Serve as an assistant project manager for complex development applications and long-range policy documents, such as specific plans, neighborhood plans, zoning ordinance updates, and general plan element updates
- Write staff reports and make public presentations
- Review CEQA documents and manage environmental consultants
- Respond to inquiries from the public regarding development projects and long-range planning initiatives
- Help staff community outreach meetings
- Research and help prepare reports and documents regarding advance planning policy topics, including General Plan amendments, precise plan updates, rezoning requests, and economic development strategy plans
- Assist our housing policy team with Housing Element updates and Housing Element implementation
- Perform site visits relating to new development applications
- Attend and present at Board, Commission, Committee, and Council meetings
Requirements:
- Minimum of two years of experience (Assistant Planner) or three to four years of experience (Associate Planner) directly related to the job duties described above, with a particular focus on current planning and development review
- Bay Area-based with the ability to work in person (typically 3x per week) within our office or a city hall
- Experience working at the front counter of City Hall, including providing information to architects, property owners, and community members. We will also consider applicants who have worked on the "other side of the counter" (architects, developers, etc.)
- Knowledge of standard development review processes and local government operations and procedures
- Ability to interpret and apply land use regulations, including general plan, specific plan, zoning code, and related regulations
- Experience interacting with other departments within City Hall, including public works, building department, and parks, and the ability to take recommendations from these departments and compile the information into publicly reviewed documents
- Ability to review architectural plans, compare those plans to applicable codes, and make recommendations to an applicant while meeting review deadlines set by the Permit Streamlining Act
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in urban or regional planning, architecture, or a closely related field
- AICP or progress toward AICP certification a plus
- Experience with GIS and Adobe Creative Cloud apps a plus

- Salary Range: $70,000-$125,000 annual salary
