Established in 1972, Por La Mar Nursery is one of the premier wholesale nurseries on the South Coast. We're a family-run business that specializes in both blooming varieties such as Mini Roses, Calla Lilies, and Kalanchoes, and foliage varieties such as Monstera, Ficus, Pothos, and many more.
Job Summary
The Assistant Head Grower will work alongside the Head Grower to manage the overall plant health, crop quality, and crop scheduling within a potted greenhouse facility. This role combines technical horticultural expertise, environmental management, labor leadership, and production planning to ensure profitable, consistent, and high-quality plant output.
Essential Functions:
§ Manages EC/pH schedules for all crops
§ Production scheduling for certain crops
§ Plant purchasing for certain crops
§ Assists on IPM/spray/biological control program
§ Assists on climate control system
§ Assists with light level requirements on crops
§ Supervises two section growers
§ Communicates with inventory control/sales/shipping to ensure product quality
§ Stay current on new varieties, technologies, and growing techniques
§ Participating in industry shows such as CAST and Cultivate
Required Qualifications:
§ Minimum 3 years of experience as a grower in potted horticulture
§ Experience with Climate Controls
§ Experience with IPM/spray/biological controls
§ Leadership and communication skills
§ Experience with Microsoft applications
§ Confidence in data-driven decision-making and problem-solving ability
§ Breeding experience (not required, but willing to learn about breeding)
