Position Overview
The Yunnanese Telephone Interpreter handles on‑demand calls, rendering the meaning of conversations between Yunnanese and English speakers across a range of industries including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel and hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. This is a remote position; the interpreter works from a quiet and secure home office environment. As an independent contractor, the role is not eligible for employee benefits.
Essential Job Functions
Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocols, avoiding omissions or additions.
Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the sessions and remain calm when speakers are incoherent, upset, or during emergency situations such as 911 calls.
Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol to ensure client expectations are met with the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP) and avoid interacting with the LEP without the client’s permission.
Understand industry protocols and terminology for medical, insurance, finance, and law contexts.
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and work in a diverse environment.
Provide the required level of service within dynamic environments, potentially handling highly emotional or stressful calls and staying on call for extended periods without breaks.
Qualifications
Fluency in Yunnanese and English, with skill in associated cultural dynamics.
Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional and accent differences to facilitate communication with the LEP.
Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for accurate interpretation.
Ability to concentrate, remain detached and neutral during sensitive subjects (e.g., end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, matters concerning sexual orientation and/or gender expression).
Education or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation (preferred).
Must be at least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring future visa sponsorship.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be able to read and write in the requested languages (highly preferred).
Ability to adapt to LLS technology enhancements to improve service delivery.
Technical Requirements
Dedicated personal device for business purposes.
Desktop/Laptop running Windows, MacOS, or ChromeOS.
Tablet (iPadOS or Android) acceptable.
Smartphone (iOS or Android) acceptable.
No use of Kaspersky products or Huawei hardware.
High‑speed Internet: download≥5Mbps, upload≥3Mbps, ping≤300ms, jitter≤30ms.
Quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
Physical Requirements
Operate a keyboard and mouse, remain stationary in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
Operate company software and systems to perform all job functions.
Sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
Ability to lift up to 26lbs.
