A Day in the Life of the Vet Tech Supervisor
In this role, you'll oversee the daily operations of the outpatient department while helping ensure exceptional patient care, smooth workflows, and strong team performance. You'll serve as a key leader for the veterinary staff by providing coaching, managing scheduling challenges, resolving workflow issues, and collaborating closely with doctors and hospital leadership. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both clinical veterinary work and leading a team in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Responsibilities include:
- Oversee daily operations of the outpatient department to ensure efficiency, patient safety, and quality care
- Supervise and support outpatient staff while maintaining accountability for productivity and policy adherence
- Serve as the primary escalation point for staff concerns, workflow issues, and operational challenges
- Manage staffing coverage, scheduling adjustments, and call-outs as needed
- Provide coaching, training, and ongoing performance feedback to team members
- Collaborate with doctors and hospital leadership to improve workflows and patient/client experiences
- Monitor and enforce hospital policies and protocols across the department
- Oversee inventory and supply management for medications and critical supplies
- Maintain a safe working environment and oversee incident reporting and follow-up
- Communicate operational updates, policy changes, and department information effectively to staff
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and training new team members
- Support process improvement initiatives and departmental goals
- Perform veterinary technician duties as needed to maintain workflow and patient care standards
- Participate in rotating Saturday appointments and weekend hospitalized treatment coverage
- Complete additional duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications:
- CVT license or currently in progress
- 3+ years of experience in the veterinary field
- 3+ years of supervisory experience or demonstrated leadership ability
- Strong understanding of outpatient veterinary workflows, procedures, and policies
- Proven leadership and team management skills
- Excellent communication and conflict resolution abilities
- Ability to coach, mentor, and hold team members accountable
- Ability to maintain a positive, productive, and professional work environment
- Willingness to rotate for Saturday appointments and weekend hospitalized treatments
