Staff Backend Engineer: Ruby on Rails, Series A Startup · Fully Remote (US & Canada) · $175,000–$230,000 base + equity (unable to provide sponsorship in the US at this time)
The company:
They are a Series A fintech company building the financial infrastructure for a paper-heavy industry; think accounts payable automation, bill pay, and full money movement between users and their suppliers. Founded by engineers with deep roots in financial data infrastructure, they are replacing paper-heavy, manual payment processes with modern automated workflows. Their product is live, their customers are larger management and boutique companies, and they are actively scaling their embedded payments product.
The team is ~20 people, ~9 engineers. Remote-first with quarterly in-person offsites. The team is small, the ownership is high, and what you build has a direct and visible impact on the
product.
What is the role?
They are not looking for someone to build from scratch, rather someone who has scaled products. They have a proven Rails monolith and a growing payments product and need someone who has been inside a complex, high-traffic system before and knows how to scale what already exists. If your experience focuses on greenfield builds, this probably isn't the right fit. If you've spent time deep inside a product handling millions or billions in transaction volume - optimizing the systems that keep it running reliably under real load, improving performance when things start to break, and scaling infrastructure that already has users depending on it - that's exactly the kind of background they're looking for.
What they are looking for
Must: Ruby on Rails is your primary language, but additional experience in languages such as Elixir is a plus
8+ years of backend engineering experience with meaningful time on existing, high-traffic systems
Real n-to-1 scaling experience: distributed systems, performance optimization, query tuning, background job architecture at volume
You have worked on payments, financial data, or complex third-party integrations including bank APIs, accounting systems, billing platforms, or similar
Experience with Kafka, Sidekiq, Redis, and background job systems at scale
Active open-source contributions or community involvement in the Ruby ecosystem
The Stack: Ruby on Rails monolith, PostgreSQL, Sidekiq, Redis, AWS, Hotwire, and light React on the frontend, TypeScript Node.js automations
The Setup and Benefits: Fully remote (US and Canada), Quarterly in-person offsites, $175,000–$230,000 base, depending on experience and location, meaningful equity, 401(k), and Health benefits
